Our office in Bangalore is headquartered on the IBC Knowledge Park. The housekeeping, security and maintenance staff working in the park are generally low paid and have very limited access to medicine. A trip to the doctor is a major expenditure and only occurs as a last resort.
CSR Bangalore works with Youth for Seva (YFS), an organisation that specialises in encouraging volunteers to support their local communities. And with help from YFS CSR has been able to arrange for visits to the Knowledge Park by medical professionals.
Medical Camp
Co-operating with the Park management, CSR organised a one day health check-up involving:
• Consultation with a physician – general health and blood pressure check
• Dental consultation
• Consultation with an optician
• Blood sugar and haemoglobin testing
• Medicines for simple ailments
125 people received check-ups and 81 were referred for further medical treatment. The hospitals involved are offering either free or subsidised treatment for those who needed more attention.
More about the medical camp can be found on the YFS website.
Spectacles
Following this successful Medical Camp CSR Bangalore organised a follow-up event, the distribution of spectacles to the IBC Knowledge Park staff. At the Medical Camp 42 people were prescribed reading and long distance glasses. CSR and YFS were supported by Narayana Nethralaya, one of the best known eye hospitals in Bangalore.
It was our pleasure again to have the support of YFS team for this event. YFS brought in doctors from three hospitals in Bangalore, Narayana Nethralaya, the Oxford Dental College andthe Sri Krishna Seva Ashrama.
CSR Bangalore has been successful in organising many events. These include the medical camp, distribution of glasses to Knowledge Park staff and distribution of computers and school kits to schools and needy children as part of the SR programme. We look forward to taking up many other similar initiatives in the future.
