The wireless digital photo frame market is predicted to grow over the next few years. This emerging market has been driven by lowering costs of LCDs and Flash memory. The change from conventional film to digital photography means that products have decreased in price very quickly as the market acceptance has grown.
Manufacturers are looking for differentiation to command higher margins through larger displays and different use cases and by adding wireless functionality to new and existing DPF designs gives them a way to differentiate their product offerings in the market. By adding Wi-Fi and Bluetooth manufacturers can add extra features such as Internet radio, music streaming, Ethernet cable replacement and Bluetooth for Mobile Phone and PMP image sharing.
Digital Cameras and Imaging: Analysis and forecasts attribute the renewed interest in digital photo frame products to consumers' heightened familiarity with digital imaging applications, the growing number and increasing significance of digital pictures in households around the world and better product design and features, which create a more enjoyable user experience.
Typical Features of a Digital Photo Frame
Screen Size - Most LCD screen sizes are 5 inches by 7 inches although larger sizes are available, some are 20” plus
Screen Type - The best type of screen is TFT or Thin Film Transistor. Normal viewing angle is around 130 degrees but can be up to 160 degrees depending on the type of display used.
Screen Resolution - This is the actual number of pixels and is normally 640 x 480.
Colour Depth - This is the number of colors a screen can display. Some LCD screens will have 24 bit color depth whilst others may support 32 bit or higher
Image and Video Formats - Majority support JPEG images but there are also a small number that support MPEG, also MP3 and MPEG4 video
Memory Card Readers - Most accept Compact Flash 1 (CF) memory cards and SD Cards, Memory Stick (MS), SD Card and Multi Media Cards (MMC)
USB Connector - This enables the photo frame to connect directly to your PC or camera in order to view the photographs.
Number of Photographs - Some Digital Photo Frames that have their own internal memory. However, that memory is usually limited which will restrict the number of photographs that can be stored and displayed. The only limit when using memory cards is the actual storage capacity of that card.
Remote Control - Allows the operation of the Digital Picture Frame much the same as a television
Wireless - Emergence of Wi-Fi to replace Ethernet and Bluetooth® for Mobile Phone and PMP image sharing
