Alcatel and CSR (CSR) have announced that Alcatel’s Bluetooth enabled OneTouch 700 and OneTouch 500 GSM phones will contain CSR’s BlueCore™01 single-chip Bluetooth IC embedded into a battery pack. Initially, Alcatel plans to use the Bluetooth functionality in the phone for cordless headsets and communication between the phone and Bluetooth enabled handheld, notebook and desktop PCs.
Laurent Guyot, Marketing Director of Alcatel, said: "It is clear to Alcatel, as it is to most companies within the telecommunications industry, that a low cost, small size single-chip solution is essential if Bluetooth technology is to be adopted on the mass scale we all hope it will. In addition to cost and integration optimisation, we put a lot of effort into Bluetooth devices interoperability and we will ensure a reliable and easy-to-use interoperation between Alcatel GSM phones and many manufacturers’ devices."
Phil O’Donovan, Managing Director of CSR, commented: "CSR has been operating for less than a year and for companies such as Alcatel to already be embedding our BlueCore01 in their products is yet another endorsement of our single-chip Bluetooth solution."
CSR’s BlueCore01 is a single-chip radio and baseband IC for 2.4GHz Bluetooth radios and is implemented in CMOS* technology. Together with an external Flash ROM containing the CSR software stack compatible with Bluetooth, it provides a fully compliant Bluetooth system for data and voice communications. The design is optimised to require very few external RF components to facilitate a rapid design of the motherboard, and therefore the fastest possible time-to-market and lowest overall cost.
Bluetooth is the codename for a technology specification for low-cost, short-range radio links between mobile PCs, mobile phones and other portable devices. The Bluetooth Special Interest Group (SIG) is an industry alliance formed by Ericsson, IBM, Intel, Nokia and Toshiba and which has recently been enlarged to include 3Com, Lucent, Microsoft, Motorola. The SIG, together with 1400 Bluetooth members, is driving the specification and roll-out of Bluetooth wireless technology.
