In parallel with the London 2012 Olympics, the Sunnyvale office held the site’s first ever Foosball Olympics on 8th August 2012, hosted by Zach Bernal of the Camera on a Chip (COACH) team.
With bronze, silver and gold medals at stake, over 20 Sunnyvale players practiced intensely after work and during breaks. Players participated in doubles and singles round robin eliminations in the weeks before the final event.
The finals kicked off with ice cream to provide plenty of sugar for the players, spectators and cheerleaders. Zach announced the players, and the games were on!
The first series of games were to determine the winners for the doubles event. Doubles
teams, Tue Ngo and Adrian Murphy, Jordan Cookman and Chancey Tilston, and Oles Valchuk and Kartik Aiyer battled it out for 1st, 2nd and 3rd place.
The second series of games were to determine the winners of the singles event out of the three finalists: Lawrence Alani, Oles Valchuk and Tue Ngo. The air was thick with tension. Finally, it was down to Oles and Tue. The game was neck and neck. Each time either Tue or Oles scored, the other would score to keep pace. “Aah!” and “Ooh!” chorused from the crowd. Tue got the last point in over Oles, securing the gold!
A Medal Ceremony followed for bronze, silver and gold medal winners in the doubles and singles events, complete with musical accompaniment.
The Foosball Olympics were a big hit and we are now eagerly looking forward to the upcoming ping pong tournament.
Congratulations to our finalists and thank you to everyone who participated, especially Zach Bernal for organising the event.
