BenQ P30 Smartphone takes CSR’s BlueCore to add to phone's extensive feature list

CSR provides Bluetooth chip for Logitech's line of Bluetooth Desktop offerings

Cambridge, UK, November 19, 2003 - CSR (Cambridge Silicon Radio) today announced that BenQ, a leading digital lifestyle devices company and one of the world’s largest mobile phone ODMs, has selected CSR, a leader in Bluetooth® silicon, to supply Bluetooth wireless technology to its latest mobile handset, the P30. The P30 is BenQ's first Smartphone and uses the Symbian operating system. CSR's BlueCore was selected to provide the P30 with Bluetooth technology and maximise the potential of the Smartphone's extensive list of functions.

In addition to Bluetooth wireless technology, the BenQ P30 Smartphone comes Multimedia-ready with a feature set including tri-band GPRS and MMS, 16-bit TFT screen, VGA digital video with MPEG-4 and MP3 audio plus Java. This specification means the P30 Smartphone user has access to graphics intensive applications, web browsing, and games. Bluetooth complements this feature set by delivering a wireless connection to a range of devices such as headsets, PCs, PDAs and other Smartphones which in turn supports the P30's rich Multimedia functionality.

To ensure smooth connectivity to a full range of Bluetooth devices, the BenQ's P30 Bluetooth software supports all the necessary profiles including dial up networking, headset, handsfree, and object push. These profiles, which ensure Bluetooth devices work together smoothly and easily as well as specifying the minimum implementations of the Bluetooth protocol stack for typical applications, were specifically chosen to provide the BenQ P30 with wireless access to a full range of compatible devices and services.

Harrison Chang, senior associated vice president of BenQ, Networking & Communications Business Group commented, "Bluetooth provides the perfect fit into our mutlimedia handsets. CSR made it easy for us to implement its Bluetooth silicon by offering its BlueCore which delivers superior power management and high levels of integration with the Symbian OS. These were prime concerns in developing our first Smartphone which includes so many Multimedia features."

The P30 Smartphone is designed around the Symbian Operating System (OS), the global industry standard operating system for advanced mobile phones. CSR is a Symbian Platinum Partner and has worked with Symbian to bring full support for its BlueCore host software and chipset into the Symbian OS. BenQ's first Smartphone is also using Symbian's UIQ customisable pen-based user interface to make it easier for the user to work with data rich services.

In September 2003, CSR announced that it would be making its BlueCore chipsets available to Symbian OS developers. The resultant increased integration between CSR’s BlueCore host software and the Symbian OS’ existing Bluetooth stack, provides a quick and efficient route for Symbian developers wishing to embed Bluetooth into their Smartphone designs.

Matthew Phillips, vice president of sales for Asia, CSR commented, "With BlueCore now fully supported in the Symbian OS, integrating CSR's BlueCore Bluetooth technology into Smartphones, such as BenQ's P30, has become very straightforward." Phillips continued, "BenQ has designed a phone with a terrific feature set and CSR is delighted to have been chosen by this leading handset manufacturer to deliver Bluetooth to its designs."
