Cambridge, UK – 12 May 2008 – CSR today announced that its UniFi Wi-Fi silicon has been selected by B.U.G. and SMK, two Japanese companies targeting embedded ITRON applications. SMK is using CSR’s UniFi for a wireless LAN module for industrial embedded use. B.U.G. has then taken the SMK module as a hardware platform, and coupled it with its own development board to provide a platform for developers of consumer and industrial applications.
Launched in 1984, ITRON has become one of the most successful operating systems in the world, powering the heart of many mobile phones, digital cameras, CD players and countless other consumer electronic devices. Adding Wi-Fi functionality to the ITRON system will enable a whole host of connected applications, where embedded devices can use Wi-Fi to wirelessly connect to the internet.
SMK has been developing a compact module, using CSR’s UniFi chip, which is specifically engineered to satisfy the requirements of the industrial and embedded markets. To ease integration and reduce the development time for customers, SMK’s module is fully compliant with Wi-Fi and comes with TELEC pre-approval.
B.U.G. has adopted the SMK module as a hardware platform, and integrated onto this a high quality device driver. The resulting subsystem enables easy integration of Wi-Fi functionality into a variety of high volume products, but its also suitable for more specialist, lower volume applications. This platform is ideal for developers of rugged portable information devices, wireless security cameras, POS terminals as well as more consumer-oriented products such as digital still cameras, printers and personal media players.
Nitadori Yasunobu, General Manger, Development Department from B.U.G. said “Our middleware is designed to make it easy for our customers to take the B.U.G. platform and integrate into a wide variety of product designs. We selected CSR’s UniFi solution because of CSR’s track record in supplying embedded, low power single chip radios.”
Hiroaki Sato, Marketing Manager, Development Centre from SMK added, “We selected CSR’s UniFi because we wanted a small, compact single-chip Wi-Fi solution with strong performance. CSR’s experience of deploying Bluetooth into embedded products meant that integrating its UniFi Wi-Fi solution was straightforward.”
Raj Gawera, Head of Marketing for CSR’s Wi-Fi BU commented, “We’re very pleased to work with B.U.G. and SMK. This is a great opportunity to jointly exploit the emerging embedded Wi-Fi market. B.U.G.’s experience with ITRON and SMK’s hardware capability make a powerful combination that will target a variety of different industrial and consumer products.”
