IPS™ Universal Print Interpreter

IPS™ Universal Print Interpreter supports all standard page description languages (PDLs) within a common architecture.

The IPS Universal Print Interpreter enables color and monochrome printers and multifunction devices to be compatible with print jobs from a wide variety of sources: Windows, Mac, Linux and mobile operating systems; office, engineering and graphic arts applications; and enterprise content and management systems.

By unifying all print languages into a single solution, the IPS Universal Interpreter allows printer and MFP manufacturers to reduce cost by minimizing the memory footprint for both RAM and flash ROM. Also, porting efforts and optimizations for performance and image quality can be easily applied across all PDLs.

Quatro® and Multicore Optimization

The IPS Universal Print Interpreter has been enhanced to take advantage of the capabilities of CSR's Quatro® family of multicore processors. Display list generation and rendering are designed to increase parallelization opportunities on these modern architectures. Multicore printer and MFP controllers based on the IPS Universal Print Interpreter can achieve measurably higher throughput at lower CPU clock frequencies. Moreover, Quatro SoC customers can reduce time-to-market thanks to CSR's pre-integration of the IPS Universal Print Interpreter into the Quatro firmware environment.

Apple AirPrint, Mopria and Google Cloud Print Certification

The optional IPS Sky configuration enables additional support for modern printing protocols from Apple, Mopria Alliance and Google, providing a certified solution for Apple AirPrint, Mopria standard and Google Cloud Print 2.0. IPS Sky for AirPrint adds an interpreter for all file formats and reference implementations of the communications protocols used by AirPrint on iOS and Mac OS X devices. IPS Sky for Mopria adds support for the file formats required by the Mopria Alliance standard and reference implementations of the communications protocols defined by the standard for printing from Android devices. IPS Sky for Google Cloud Print adds a lightweight XML Print Ticket parser as well as reference implementations of the communications protocols used by Google’s Cloud Print 2.0 servers.

Overview

Transparent Imaging Model

CSR’s innovative OneImage common display list technology has been extended to support native transparency rendering for greatest fidelity to PDF documents created in Adobe Acrobat and other applications used by creative professionals and for the rendering rules of the XPS and Open XPS Document formats. Sharing rendering components across interpreters for all PDLs improves compatibility and reduces the required memory footprint to add support for direct printing of XPS and OpenXPS Documents.

Designed for Customization

CSR provides complete source code for the IPS Universal Print Interpreter and a full set of engineering documentation to enable OEMs to customize the interpreters for specific market requirements. With its layered architecture, application programming interface (API) and common display list model, IPS reduces time-to-market and development costs.

CSR Engineering Support Services

CSR offers Source Code Maintenance and Engineering Support Programs that can shorten development cycles and ensure that the latest language features are available as new controllers are developed. The IPS source code license includes technical support, software integration training and source code maintenance. The Source Code Maintenance Program provides extended source code maintenance and technical consulting, including informative technical bulletins and software patches and updates.

CSR’s Engineering Support Program provides direct software integration assistance and design recommendations to optimize the interface between the print language interpreter and the controller. OEMs can also work with a CSR-authorized development partner. These companies have experience in CSR’s IPS software integration and can offer fixed-cost, turnkey controller development for a range of controller configurations and print engines.
